The Ridanna Valley
can look back on a long and proud tradition of mining
. On the Monteneve-Schneeberg mountain, between the Ridanna and Passiria Valleys, a large ore deposit runs through the mountains at an altitude of 2000 to 2500 metres above sea level. Here was one of the highest mines in Europe
, where for centuries silver, lead and zinc were mined. The first written record comes from the year 1237. The former ore processing plant in Maiern, built from 1871, ca. 1890 Paula Volgger
, the head of our hotel and mother of eight children, all of whom are involved in its running, remembers when her grandfather, her father and her brothers were working on the Monteneve-Schneeberg. It is also thanks to her that the memory of the mining tradition is kept alive at the Hotel Plunhof.
From this deep emotional solidarity with the mining tradition we have developed and realised a new wellness concept in the new “Spa Minera”
. The name comes from the Ladin Dolomite word “minéra” or mine. “Wellness above and below ground
” is the philosophy of the “Spa Minera”, which brings history and tradition into harmony with recuperation and health. It was our wish to blend nature, regionality, experience, health, tradition, quality and authenticity with maximum comfort for the demanding spa guest.
The well-known Tyrolean architect Karl Landauer designed the 2200 m² extension to the existing wellness facility, which was constructed according to the strict ecological criteria of the “KlimaHotel” label. Stone, wood, water, a fascinating play of light and spacious glazed elements that afford views over the picturesque landscape of the Isarco Valley all characterise the building. It was our express desire to give priority to the use of local materials: for example stone from the excavations of South Tyrolean craft artists was used in appointing the grotto area, while silver quartzite provides a mystical mood and a harmonious atmosphere. The new spa contains wellness areas such as the miners’ lawn with saline pool, the grotto world with the mystical gallery lake, the spacious tunnel sauna with its panoramic windows and the Realm of the Miners with its fresh spring water, waterfall and Kneipp pool. After the miners’ sauna in the miners’ house and the miners’ changing room, guests proceed to the “Heavenly Kingdom” where they can majestically relax by an open fire.
We are pleased to be able to carry on the mining tradition in its new guise as the Spa Minera. We are very grateful to the South Tyrol Museum of Mining which has made available two original pit trucks and the images that can be seen in the spa area.
If the Spa Minera stimulates your interest in the mining industry, a visit to the Mining Museum is certainly a worthwhile experience.
The Monteneve-Schneeberg Adventure Mine preserves the entire production chain of a mine, letting visitors look back over the entire process of ore mining, from transport to preparation, as well as showing the technical developments of the last 800 years. Many of the guides come from Ridanna mining families and will enrich your visit with first-hand stories and information. BergbauWelt Schneeberg
