South Tyrol is probably the absolute mecca for mountain bikers. Such optimal conditions are scarcely to be found elsewhere in Europe! The beautiful landscape offers endless touring opportunities for all levels. A perfect, modern infrastructure offers everything that makes life pleasant for cyclists – from special bike hotels to the rental of electric bikes, mountain bikes, bicycles, and all the associated equipment.

In Ratschings / Racines and Ridnaun / Ridanna and in the adjacent Eisack / Isarco Valley, mountainbiking is possible starting from the spring and continuing until well into late autumn. The terrain is varied and diverse, so that each tour is a truly unique experience and everyone – from casual cyclists to the top professional, from XC to freeride fans – is assured an enjoyable experience. Especially the many old mining trails and military routes are ideal for biking, as well as the forest roads and forest paths – and single tracks are available for all levels of expertise and training. Another big plus are the cable cars, which also operate in the summertime. Moreover, many a tour is still an insider tip, so that the biking fun is not spoiled by mass tourism.

With regards to GPS tracking, too, we're completely up to date: For many of the tours, GPS tour tracks can already be downloaded from the Internet. The planning of the tours is therefore easier and more comfortable than ever before, and there is a lot more time to enjoy the wonderful scenery.

South Tyrol is also the land of bike events. Events range from pure professional racing, like the legendary Giro d'Italia, which runs every year through South Tyrol, to the "toughest mountain bike race in the Dolomites," the Dolomiti Superbike in the Pusteria Valley, all the way down to open cycling events such as the Sella Ronda Bikeday. Thus, South Tyrol is clearly the preeminent cycling region of the Alps!!

The Bikemobile Card represents a great new way for bicycle sport enthusiasts to explore South Tyrol. It allows you to use all public transportation systems in South Tyrol. Additionally, it entitles you to one use of a bicycle on loan. This is just one more way that South Tyrol is trying to promote gentle, environmentally-sound tourism.

Discription of Tour

The starting-point of this tour far from traffic is the valley station of the aerial cableway in Sterzing / Vipiteno.
From there we proceed along the main road to the traffic lights, then turn off towards Wiesen / Prati. Instead of following the road, in the right turn just after the bridge we turn to the left and then after 100 meters we turn right below the railway underpass. After the underpass, we follow the tractor trail up to the start of the forest.
Once we come to the gate, we follow the forest trail to the north and towards Ried / Novale and the ruins of the fortress of Strassberg / Castello della Strada. After the ruins, we continue following the forest trail and come to the gate, which can be passed easily. Once here, we continue towards Gossensass / Colle Isarco, through the whole village, using the railway underpass at the railway station until we reach the west side of the valley basin. On the asphalt road, we hold more to the left. After crossing the creek bridge, we continue towards Steckholz / Ceppaia and then go downhill. We cross the freeway underpass and soon reach a somewhat hidden junction where we turn left onto a footpath. Attention: Tree roots! After about 1 km, we reach the Brenner / Brennero State Road that we cross a few yards to the south. We cross the bridge and turn left after the railway underpass. From here we find a cool trail with an exciting finale that takes us back to the starting-point. Attention: Watch your head towards the end! The dark curved railway underpass is not very high!

Discription of Tour

This moderately difficult tour is mostly over less-traveled asphalt roads. The descent into the Jaufen / Giovo Valley is an enjoyable stretch, followed by a brief bit of abandoned forest road which will take us to Gasteig / Casateia. The starting-point is at the headquarters of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI) on the Penserjochstrasse. From there we head towards Rust / Olmedo - Gospeneid / Caspineto. At the "Innerrust" sign, we proceed straight ahead and stay to the right. After the next junction turn right up drive towards Gospeneid / Caspineto. Here we pass a few farmsteads until we come to a fork in the trail. We head towards the Jaufen / Giovo Valley. We go to the "Waldeben" toboggan run until we reach the Hotel Rainer in the Jaufen / Giovo Valley. At the barrage weir, a forest road branches to the left to Gasteig / Casateia. Now we have arrived at the Gasteigerhof at the Jaufen / Giovo Pass Road. We head towards Sterzing / Vipiteno and back to the starting-point..Ausgangspunkt zurück.

Discription of Tour

This tour is relatively simple, as long as your goal is only the Martalm. However, for the second part of the tour, to the Gewingesalm, it requires good stamina and fitness (400 meters of altitude differential and an extra 8.1 km in length). The starting point is the parking lot outside the Hotel Schneeberg in Maiern / Masseria. We pass by the hotel to the left and after 100 meters follow the paved road on the left in the direction of the Martalm. At the next junction, we take the right asphalt road uphill to the farm.

We continue past the forest gate in the direction of the Martalm. At the junction, we take a sharp right down into the valley until we reached the Martalm (hosted rest-stop). Then we continue down to a fork in the road. But this time, we proceed straight ahead (not via the route we took on the way here). After 400 meters we keep going straight. Now we come to the turnoff to the Gewingesalm. Those who still have enough power can continue to the right until they reach it. We bike comfortably down to the left.

Discription of Tour

This is a moderately difficult tour in the middle of a beautiful area with an interesting past. It can be combined with a hike from the Posch House via the Kaindljoch (instructional trail) to the old mining village of St. Martin at the Schneeberg / Monteneve (2,335 meters above sea-level). The Provincial Mining Museum of Ridnaun / Ridanna – Schneeberg / Monteneve is the starting point. We start at the gate and drive up the asphalt road. At first it's very steep, and then after about 800 meters it levels off. We turn left at the bridge and follow the signs indicating the way to the Moarerberg Hut. Behind the crumbling Posch House, we turn right and continue about 200 meters to the Moarerberg Hut. Here we can stop and refresh ourselves before returning down the same route back to the starting-point.

Discription of Tour

A long and arduous ascent leads up to the Rosskopf ski area with its many Alpine meadows. The magnificent panorama will reward you for the trouble. The starting-point is the parking lot at the Rosskopf / Monte Cavallo aerial cableway. The tour begins at the signpost "Raminges 19/23 Rosskopf," which we follow. We bicycle up the paved road towards Thuins / Tunes - Telfes / Telves. In the second bend (at Telfes / Telves) we go straight ahead, past the Rainer House, on the gravel road towards Rosskopf. We follow the forest road about 6 km, past the Furl Hut, then continue to the left up to the Sterzinger House (AVS House). We follow the hiking trail to the Stern Hut (hosted in the summertime) and then come to Trail No. 23, which now leads us exactly to the Kuhalm and then on to the Ochsenalm. The descent will take us past the Freundalm on the Atscherwiesen (tobogganning) until we reach Telfes / Telves. From there, you can take either the asphalt road on to Mareit / Mareta or continue back to the starting-point in Sterzing / Vipiteno. This is a very rewarding bike ride..
